Cautious support for traffic calming proposals

Saline residents have given a cautious welcome to Fife Council’s draft traffic calming proposals. Many people took the opportunity to comment as part of Saline Environmental Group’s well attended consultation event funded as part of its BIG Lottery grant.

According to John Crane, community council vice chair, “ Speeding, especially by heavy lorries, has been an issue for some time and traffic levels seem to be increasing.

"This proposal is therefore most opportune. We are pleased that Transportation staff took people’s responses that we did not want the village covered in blobs of tar on board in their own consultation event.”

While there is support for the proposal, the community council feels that there is a need to further develop them.

“Bearing in mind that this is a spectacular road corridor, we feel that opportunities should be taken to raise local environmental quality.

"In addition, there are genuine concerns about the Oakley Road junction and congestion at our village school” said John.

“We have raised these points in our response to Transportation. We are conscious of constraints on Fife Council’s budgets and have offered our assistance, through Saline Environmental Group, to raise additional money.”

According to Cllrs Bill Walker and Bobby Clelland: “It is good that Saline Community Council has recognised the need to help tackle budget restrictions.

"It is also good that people attended Transportation events. The lesson to others is that officers will listen if people make suggestions as early as possible.”
